Roll On!!

Have you ever delighted in something or someone so much that you were consumed with it? The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the word delight as “a high degree of gratification or pleasure: joy.” Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” The Hebrew word for “delight” used in this verse is oneg which means daintiness or exquisite delight. We are to be dependent upon God and gain our full pleasure from Him. We are called to enjoy God and God alone. When we do this our desires are aligned directly with His desires which result in bringing about the very best for our lives.

It goes on to say in Psalms 37: 5, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He will do it.” Two Hebrew words make up this message. The first Hebrew word galal means to literally “roll away.” The second which is a preposition ‘al means “upon.” Putting the full text together translates to “Roll your way upon the Lord.” When a camel prepares to carry a load, it lays down, so the person can roll the load onto its back. Once the rolling on is completed, the camel arises and bears the full load of the baggage and the person. Using the analogy of the camel, this verse is conveying the message that the Lord (written here in all caps meaning Yahweh, the distinctive personal name of the God of Israel) is there for you to “roll onto Him” your full load, including yourself so that He will carry you and the load you are trying to bear.

What load are you carrying today? Are you carrying guilt and shame about something that you feel you have done or have had done to you? Are you facing a broken relationship? Are you facing a mountain of debt and limited financial resources to cover it? Are you mourning a loss in your life and you can’t seem to pull it together? Are you experiencing challenges in your work place or home life that seem to weigh you down and keep you from experiencing joy? You may be experiencing one or more of these. You may be experiencing some other burden that you are trying to bear on your own. If so, God says stop carrying the load and “roll it” onto me. Come upon me and let me carry you and your load.

Today, receive the victory He offers. Today, let go of the burdens and “roll on” to our faithful and loving God. Today, hold fast to knowledge and understanding that God loves you and cares for you.
